Straddie’s Gorge Walk Upgrade

Member for Cleveland, Mark Robinson has welcomed the announcement of a $600,000 upgrade for Straddie’s Gorge Walk and said the project would go some way to help tourism on the island.

“Whilst I wholeheartedly support the project, it does not compensate for the mass job losses to come if Labor forces a premature 2019 closure of sandmining against the clear will of the island’s 2000 residents,” Dr Robinson said.

“Carefully considered planning, along with additional amounts of significant funding need to be injected into growing tourism initiatives so as to ensure a successful transition of North Stradbroke Island into the future.”

Dr Robinson said a $50 million Dunwich Harbour redevelopment was crucial to the Government’s plan to grow tourism dramatically.

“The paltry $1.4 million proposed in the government’s failed Economic Transition Strategy will do nothing and go nowhere.”

“There is a genuine concern amongst the island’s businesses and residents that the economy is doomed without the commitment to establish an appropriate harbour facility – a facility that will cater adequately for tourists’ and the community’s expectations post sandmining,” he said.
