Shadow Minister for Main Roads, Fiona Simpson today joined with Member for Cleveland, Mark Robinson and Member for Redlands, Matt McEachan to call on the State Government to widen Mt Cotton Road at the Sheldon and Mt Cotton sections.
"After a first-hand inspection of the road today there are two very obvious problems: the road is too narrow in sections and cars and trucks come dangerously close to each other," Ms Simpson said.
"Widening the road and separating the lane markings in the middle of the road would increase safety for commuters who use this busy road every day, and for residents turning into driveways.
Mr Robinson noted that there have been many accidents and a number of fatalities on this road over the years.
"Residents have reported that they have almost been hit by cars while they have been waiting to turn into their drive," Mr Robinson said.
"We need urgent investment in the State Roads in Redland City.
Mr McEachan noted the recent upgrading of Mt Cotton Road elsewhere and challenged the State Government to do likewise in the Sheldon and Mt Cotton suburbs.
"It has taken the Labor Government all year to consider making Mt Cotton Road safer, despite repeated calls from the community," Mr McEachan said.
"It is time for this Labor Government to stop talking and to take action to save lives.
